At VL Energy, our commitment to excellence extends beyond providing innovative solutions – it encompasses staying informed and educated about the ever-evolving regulatory landscape. We understand that keeping up with regulatory adjustments is essential for ensuring the success and sustainability of energy projects, especially for all our clients under environmental consulting. That is why we are excited to share some insights into recent changes and updates to the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) directives, specifically those related to monitoring, measurement, and verification (MMV) plans, closure plans, and closure certificates for carbon capture, utilization, and storage activities in the province.
As of April 25, 2023, the Government of Alberta has entrusted the AER with overseeing MMV plans, closure plans, and closure certificates for carbon capture, utilization, and storage activities. This development underscores the importance of stringent oversight in environmental protection and sustainable energy practices. The directive covers areas like Equity, Conservation, Production Control, Disposal/Storage, Approval Transfers, Gas and Ethane Removal, and Special Well Spacing. This adjustment went into effect on July 27, 2023, thus replacing the previous edition issued March 27, 2023.
One key aspect of these updates involves amendments to references and submission requirements within Directive 065: Resources Applications for Oil and Gas Reservoirs. Specifically, sections 2.1.4 and 4.1.7 have been revised to reflect the new guidelines. Additionally, we have delved into the principles and objectives outlined in Appendix P, which encapsulates the industry's approach to monitoring, measurement, and verification plans for carbon dioxide sequestration projects.
Our familiarity with these regulations ensures that our clients can confidently navigate the compliance journey while focusing on the strategic aspects of their projects. For more information on Directive 065: Resources Applications for Oil and Gas Reservoirs see the link to the PDF document provided by the AER:
